i lay in the bathtub
i lay in the bathtub
the water slowly shifting in shape
with every gentle movement
of my naked body
my face floats precariously
above the surface,
eyes nose and mouth
the only things left above water.
my hair sticks to my skin
like thin roots of a plant,
drinking the liquid
gathered on my cheeks.
i am silent,
my mouth sealed from the steam,
the only sound surrounding me
the drip drip
drip of the almost-off faucet
it’s filled too much,
the tub, and
the water sometimes sloshes
from the side
making shallow puddles
on the tile floor.
and as my body bobbles
i think
it would be so easy
to dip below
the water in my tub,
to let the bubbles of my breath
fade with me.
